2) THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Stewards are continuing to fulfill their obligations to make this program work, with 700+ Stewards, Remitters and Sub-Remitters filing reports monthly and paying fees. There has also been a significant upswing in public awareness of and support for the OES program with 67% of Ontarians now aware of this program – that’s a 45% increase in awareness since this time last year.
Our mobile tour spread the word through the spring, summer and fall, meeting up with residents at festivals fairs, powwows and other events travelling 135,000 km through rural and remote northern and southern Ontario. We expanded communications, increasing awareness to support collection and encourage Ontarians to keep more unwanted electronics out of landfills.
Through 2011 we collected more unwanted electronics than ever before for recycling, reuse and safe disposal with a 65% increase in collected electronics over 2010, and 90,150 tonnes collected since the program began.

3) OES Announces Consultation on Financial Incentives Paid to Approved ProcessorS
OES announced on Friday December 16 that it was launching a consultation regarding levels of financial incentives paid to processors for recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) via the Processor Incentive (PI) program. The intent of the consultation is to outline OES’s objectives in adjusting PI and delivering a cost-effective program that meets our mandate to deliver the WEEE Program while impacting the marketplace in a fair manner.
OES is dedicated to finding cost efficiencies in our structure, while also adjusting the incentives paid by stewards once appropriate information has been collected and assessed. In addition, OES contractually maintains the right to review and adjust annually the incentives paid to processors.
Obtaining feedback and input from stakeholders is important to OES. As such, OES will seek and consider feedback from processors and other stakeholders before releasing the final PI rates.
Processors and other interested stakeholders are invited to comment on the OES proposal. Consultations will take place in January 2012, and comments will be received until February 2, 2012.
4) OES HIRES ENFORCEMENT OFFICER
The OES Management Team recently hired an Enforcement Officer, Michael Anderson, who will actively engage with Steward/Remitters/Sub-Remitters and service providers on issues related to program enforcement and compliance activities. The program will place a greater emphasis on enforcement activities in the New Year.
